Cultivating a growth mindset: why it's your most powerful tool
Every day is an opportunity to learn something new, whether that be problem solving methods, first aid training or even learning safeguarding strategies. But did you know that ultimately, your mindset determines how you choose to navigate these new experiences?
Carol Dweck, an acclaimed psychologist, studied human motivation over the course of 40 years, and concluded that people possess one of two mindsets – growth or fixed.
Fixed Mindset Vs Growth Mindset
Dweck proposed that an individual with a growth mindset has a strong drive to learn, embracing any new challenge with persistency and resilience. Conversely, an individual who has a fixed mindset will show resistance when it comes to developing their knowledge and abilities – convinced that intelligence is innate and cannot be improved.
It's not just the learning approach that differ the two mindsets from one another – they vary in many traits, from levels of effort and motivation, to attitudes about mistakes and criticism. They can even influence how much (or little) you achieve in your life.
| Fixed Mindset | Growth Mindset | |
| Core Belief | Intelligence and abilities are static and unchangeable traits, despite efforts to improve these | Intelligence and abilities can be improved through learning and dedication |
| Ambition | To appear smart and talented, avoiding any new activities or skills that might contradict this | To learn and acquire new skills, helping them improve and better themself |
| Failure | Feel defeated at setbacks, with the attitude that they’re not good enough | Feel motivated by setbacks, with the attitude that it’s an opportunity to grow |
| Challenges | Reject new or difficult tasks, as this poses a threat to their self-esteem | Embrace new or difficult tasks, determined to enhance their abilities |
| Feedback | Ignore constructive feedback as this is perceived as a personal attack rather than beneficial | Welcomes constructive feedback as this provides valuable direction to develop further |
| Mistakes | Thinks mistakes are negative and feels embarrassed by them, so avoids them at all costs | Think mistakes are important as they demonstrate that progress is being made |
| Achievements | Unlikely to reach their full potential due to their fear of failure | Likely to reach higher levels of achievement as they’re constantly seeking ways to improve |
| Success | Likely to plateau in life as they lack the drive to improve themselves | Likely to lead a fulfilling and successful life as they’re continually growing |
The Power of a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset can serve you in a multitude of ways.
Supports Relationships
With a growth mindset, you believe there is potential for growth in yourself as well as those around you. As a result, you’re more likely to approach relationship challenges with an open mind, enabling you to resolve conflicts and communicate more effectively.
Elevates Creativity & Problem-Solving
Those with a growth mindset are predisposed to focus on solutions as opposed to dwelling on setbacks. As a result, they’re able to develop creative, innovative ideas that help them to navigate and ultimately overcome any challenge they encounter.
Promotes Life-Long Learning
It’s beneficial for personal development as well as continuing professional development, as the growth mindset naturally encourages you to seek out new learning opportunities despite the inevitability of failure when trying something new. When you accept failure as part of the process, you’re more likely to take risks and grow.
Encourages Resilience in the Face of Failure
As it fosters resilience, the growth mindset also helps to deliver mental fortitude when faced with adversity. This will support you in maintaining an optimistic attitude with lowered stress levels, making any challenge a more enjoyable experience overall.
Boosts Confidence & Motivation
Adopting a growth mindset will also support confidence and motivation. By recognising that your efforts and persistence will deliver improved results, you’ll believe in your own abilities more.

How to Build your Growth Mindset
If you’re unsure of your mindset’s disposition, you can take a growth mindset test to ascertain this.
Don’t feel disheartened if you don’t currently possess a growth mindset, as you can adjust your perspectives and daily practises to build one – enabling you to maximise your potential in all areas of life.
Embrace Challenges
You may have a tendency to avoid difficult tasks, but instead try to actively seek these out – reminding yourself that it’s an exciting opportunity to grow, even if it seems daunting at first.
Learn From Feedback
Constructive criticism offers a plethora of value to someone that’s learning a new skill. Try to use such feedback as direction for your growth – you can even actively seek out feedback from your peers by asking for ways to improve.
Emphasise Effort Over Results
Instead of only celebrating the positive outcome or success of an endeavour, remember to recognise the effort and persistence that resulted in progress.
View Failures as Learning Opportunities
Failures don’t have to be a negative experience, but can rather be a valuable learning that helps you to better yourself. Next time you fail, assess what went wrong and how this can be mitigated to develop a stronger approach next time.
Seek Out Growth-Minded Individuals
Those you interact with influence your mindset. By surrounding yourself with individuals that encourage learning and growth, you’ll naturally adopt a growth-oriented mindset.
In addition to the above, Dweck herself has explored the ways one can develop a growth mindset.
Growth Mindset & Role of Courses
Ultimately, an individual with a growth mindset perceives training courses as a rewarding endeavour – this helps them to maximise the value of courses and effectively expand their skillset. Furthermore, it positions them competitively against those with a fixed mindset, who lack the drive or initiative to improve their abilities.
